TYLER – The UT Tyler volleyball team took a four-set loss to No. 5 Southwestern University in a non-conference contest on Thursday in the first of three home matches this week at the Herrington Patriot Center.

The Patriots (13-4) is now 7-2 in non-conference play this season, while the Pirates (19-3) picked up two wins on Thursday in Tyler after also earning a sweep of East Texas Baptist earlier in the day. UT Tyler, which fell 25-18, 19-25, 25-17, 25-16, will return to action at 7 p.m. on Friday against Belhaven and then again at 2 p.m. on Saturday against Louisiana College in a pair of American Southwest Conference matches.  

Kaitlyn Budisalovich led the Patriots against Southwestern with a career-high 15 kills, while Brianna Bellehumeur established a career-best with 22 digs against the Pirates. Budisalovich had six of her 15 kills in the second set where the Patriots had a .282 attacking percentage in their win. Bellehumeur, who now has 205 digs in her freshman season, added nine kills to go along with her 22 digs which topped her 21 against Hardin-Simmons in the season opener.

Reighanna Guzman had 20 assists and nine digs, while Madison Denning contributed 16 assists and 13 digs for the Patriots from the setter position. Samantha Lee added six kills and two blocks and Kayla McCoy led the team with four block assists and also had seven kills.

UT Tyler is now 4-2 at home this season going into this weekend where it hosts Belhaven and Louisiana College. In their first meetings, the Patriots lost a five-set match to the Blazers in Mississippi and swept the Wildcats in Louisiana.
