BELTON – The UT Tyler volleyball team opened its season with a pair of impressive wins over Hardin-Simmons and UMass-Boston on Friday at the Mary Hardin-Baylor Tournament led by freshman Brianna Bellehumeur who had 21 kills and Samantha Lee who supplied 13 blocks in the wins. The Patriots will return to action at 10 a.m. on Saturday against Regis College and then again at 12:30 p.m. against Susquehanna College to complete their stay in Belton.

UT Tyler started the day with a hard-fought five-set win over the Cowgirls who ended the Patriots season last year in the American Southwest Conference tournament. The Patriots opened with a 25-22 first-set win before the two teams alternated wins to set up a fifth and decisive set. The Patriots would take the match with a 15-11 win in the final set. Bellehumeur and Haley Nemitz led the team with 12 kills each, while Reighanna Guzman had 30 assists and six digs. Kaitlyn Budisalovich added seven kills and Lee, Blair Dressendorfer and Loren Guerra had six kills each. Lee also had 10 blocks in the match. Madison Denning added 16 assists, while Bellehumeur led the team with 21 digs to go along with her 12 kills.

The Patriots needed only four sets to earn a 25-14, 25-16, 19-25, 25-18 win over UMass-Boston with Dressendorfer and Bellehumeur leading the team with nine kills each.  Denning would provide 19 assists and Guzman 17, while Makenna Bartlett provided 13 digs for the Patriots. Lee had three blocks in the match after her 10-block performance against the Cowgirls.

UT Tyler will return home from the season-opening tournament to host the Dakotas Patriot Classic on Sept. 8-9 at the Herrington Patriot Center.
