BELTON – The UT Tyler Patriots split two matches on the first day of the American Southwest Conference Volleyball Championship with a commanding sweep of Howard Payne before falling in four on Thursday at the Mayborn Campus Center.

“The team came out with a lot of fire and we really executed well,” UT Tyler coach Lyndsay Mashe said. “We hit our best percentages of the season in set 1 and 2. In set 3, HPU really started playing defense well and we started making more mistakes but we stayed resilient and never panicked. I was very proud of their effort.”

The Patriots (18-7) fell in four sets (27-25, 25-22, 17-25, 25-19) to Mary Hardin-Baylor in their second match of the day. The loss sends them to an elimination game at 2:30 on Friday against Hardin-Simmons. UT Tyler swept the Cru in the regular-season meeting between the two teams back on Sept. 24 at the ASC Crossover in Austin. With their 25-9, 25-10, 26-24 sweep of HPU on Thursday, the Patriots are now 11-4 in three-set matches. UT Tyler hit .600 in the first set and then .444 in the second to put little doubt in the match.

Loren Guerra had 11 kills and three blocks to help lead the Patriots to the win over HPU, while Rebekah Maner and Samantha Lee had eight kills each. Lee would lead the team with five blocks and Emily Robison had 23 digs for the defense. Rebecca Floyd, who was named to the All-ASC team for the second time in her career, would orchestrate the offense with 23 assists and also had eight digs. Reighanna Guzman added 15 assists in the rotating setter system.

Lee would finish the match with an absurd .727 attacking percentage and she now leads the team with a .299 attack this season. Maner hit .615 against HPU and Guerra was at .321 on a team-high 28 attacks.

Brieanne Brown led the Patriots against UMHB with a season-best 21 kills which was one off of her career-best from last year against Hendrix. Brown, a Belton native, hit .395 in the match and also had two blocks in her best match of the season. She was the only double-digit kill producer against the Cru with Jordan Debus adding nine kills and Callie Reed seven more.

Robison would have 23 digs for the second straight match, while Kyana Alvarez having 13 digs. The Patriots would use three setters in the match with Floyd having 21 assists, Guzman 12 and freshman Jessica Finch adding 13 assists and four digs.
