VB's Wood Named Defender of the Week

RICHARDSON -- UT Tyler freshman volleyball libero Emily Wood was named the American Southwest Conference East Division Defensive Player of the Week for Oct. 18-22, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.

Wood, a native of Waller, Texas (Waller HS), averaged 6.7 digs over three sweeps for the Patriots last week, including two against conference opponents East Texas Baptist and Mississippi College. In all three matches, Wood posted team-highs in digs (15 vs. ETBU, 27 vs. Centenary, and 19 vs. MC).

The win against ETBU made UT Tyler history, marking the first time the Patriots swept ETBU in straight sets, as well as the first time the Patriots beat the Lady Tigers in Marshall.

Wood, who takes the division’s top weekly defensive award for the second time this season, also added four service aces, three assists and one kill. She leads the ASC with 6.27 digs per set.

The Patriots wrap-up the regular season Tuesday night at home before heading to the ASC Championship Tournament set for Nov. 3-5 on the campus of UT Dallas in Richardson.
