grade point average from UT Tyler must submit their transcript from

have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher. A copy
of their acceptance (conditional)letter to UT Tyler must also be
submitted.
3. Applicants must not graduate before May 2013 and must be available
for the entire term of squad duties extending from the time they make
the squad through and including May 2013.
4. Applicants MUST be able to attend pre-camp activities, summer camp, and post-camp practices and activities.
5.
Applicants must submit the squad application and a $20.00 cheer tryout
fee at the time of tryouts. (will be emailed to you before tryouts)
Deposit Fee:
Each individual selected as a squad member must submit a $100.00 squad
member deposit fee. This $100.00 deposit is only refundable upon
completion of the individual's one year term as a squad member and
return of all university owned uniforms and equipment.
If after paying the $100.00 deposit, a squad member resigns or is
removed from his/her position, the deposit will not be refunded. If the
squad member destroys or loses university owned uniforms and equipment,
the $100.00 deposit will be used to replace the
items and the individual will be returned the unused portion.
Health Insurance:
All individuals selected as squad members must be covered and must
provide a copy of their health insurance information to their coach by
the first day of camp. Failure to do so will result in removal from the
squad.
Stipends:
The UT Tyler cheerleading squad does not offer scholarships. Members of
the spirit squad may be eligible for a stipend to be awarded at the end
of each semester. Criteria used in awarding stipends will be based on
GPA, academic excellence, community service,
and commitment to the squad. To be eligible for a stipend each member
that satisfies the academic requirements, 2.0 or higher, must complete a
stipend application (usually emailed to each member towards the end of
each semester). Stipends will be awarded at
the end of the Fall and Spring semesters. The amount of the stipend will
be based on two factors:
a. The number of qualified applicants
b. A sliding scale will be used to determine the amount to be awarded.
Higher scoring members will receive a higher amount than members with
lower scores.
Receipt of a stipend is no guarantee that a stipend will be awarded for any subsequent semester.
Tryout Requirements:
tumbling pass
standing tumbling (if any)...standing backhandspring is preferred
3 jumps (toe touch is mandatory)
an individual cheer (will be uploaded to YouTube June 1 for you to learn by tryouts)
fight song (will be uploaded to YouTube June 1 for you to learn by tryouts)
performance in a group and/or partner stunt
Everyone always asks about tumbling....if you are not strong in tumbling
but are strong in stunting or another area you are encouraged to
tryout. A solid standing backhandspring is preferred,
however the cheerleaders enroll in a tumbling class at a gym off campus
(not to be expected every year) which could give you an opportunity to
improve on tumbling skills.
Applicants for the cheer squad are judged at tryouts on execution and
technique of motions & jumps, collegiate appearance,
enthusiasm/spirit, expression and attitude. If
you
are coming from a previous cheerleading squad, please have your current
or previous cheer coach email Coach Carla Turner a letter of reference.
"The
UT Tyler cheer squad is not a competitive squad. We are game-day,
traditional cheerleaders. The highest priority for my team is being a
good student, a campus leader and good
teammate. Current and previous members of my team have been Nursing
majors, Chemistry majors, Computer Science majors, Finance majors and
Music majors - to name a few. It is possible to be a successful student
while being a cheerleader, but you must practice good time
management skills and be responsible. I do my best to give you tools to
be successful at both. A good attitude and leadership skills are the top
two character qualities I look for in my cheerleaders.
We cheer at all home volleyball games and at all home
men & women basketball games. We make community event appearances, and sometimes attend soccer, baseball and softball games.
If you have further questions, please do not hesitate
to email me at any time. I look forward to seeing you at open practices and tryouts in June!" -- Coach Carla Turner
