SEGUIN – In the postseason, teams need players to step up that are not usually in the spotlight. The Patriots got that from Kailey Henderson and Whitney Romero on Saturday as UT Tyler (40-2) staved off elimination with a 3-0 victory over Texas Lutheran (39-2) in the second game of the NCAA Division III Seguin Regional Championship series at Morck Field.

The Patriots and Bulldogs both ended long winning streaks by their opponent and will now play the decisive game at noon on Sunday with the winner advancing to next week’s NCAA Super Regional round. TLU put the Patriots in the must-win situation with a 7-2 win in the first game to snap a 32-game winning streak by UTT, while the Bulldogs had a 32-game game winning streak of their own end with the loss in the second game.

It was a classic pitchers’ duel to start the game as it was scoreless heading into the fifth inning. Theresa Gonzales hit a single to left center for just the second hit of the game for UT Tyler. Up to the plate came Kailey Henderson. She sent a ball to deep right field where it bounced out of the glove of McKay Bloxham and over the wall for a two-run home run to put the Patriots on the board. It was just the second home run of the season for Henderson and her fifth extra-base hit. She finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Romero (13-0) remained undefeated on the season with a complete-game shutout. She stranded four Bulldog runners in scoring position, allowing seven hits and striking out three. Jordaine Bishop (9-1) took her first loss of the season for Texas Lutheran. She threw five innings and allowed two runs on four hits.
