RICHARDSON – The No. 3-ranked UT Tyler softball team extended its winning streak to 20 games with an 11-2 series-opening win over UT Dallas on Saturday at the UTD Softball Field.

The Patriots (27-1, 18-1 ASC) had four players with two hits and Ashley Perez and Lynsey Mitchell both hit homers in support of Colleen Bentke who improved to 14-1 with a complete-game win.

Mitchell finished the game 2-for-3 with four RBIs, including a two-run home run to right-center field in the fifth. Perez hit a solo home to start a three-run fifth and now has 10 homers in her freshman season. After going 2-for-3 with one RBI, Perez has 44 RBIs through 28 games. Andrea Gonzales added two hits on four at-bats and Nicole Garcia was 2-for-4 with two runs scored as the team’s leadoff hitter. UT Tyler scored seven of its 11 runs in the final two innings, including four in the sixth with a two-run RBI double by Andrea Gonzales, a sacrifice fly from Mitchell and an RBI single by Theresa Gonzales for the final run of the game.

Bentke recorded six strikeouts and limited the Comets to five hits and one earned run. A junior from Brenham, Benkte went through the UTD lineup without allowing a walk. UTD’s Karen Crane (11-6) took the loss after allowing nine hits in four innings of work.

UT Tyler and UTD will resume and conclude the series with a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday at the UTD Softball Field.
