BELTON – The No. 3-ranked UT Tyler softball team lost its only game of the season with a 5-3 defeat to Mary Hardin-Baylor on Friday in the American Southwest Conference series finale at Dee Dillon Field.

The Patriots (7-1, 5-1 ASC) won the series 2-1 after opening with 7-1 and 7-2 wins over the Cru (6-4, 3-3 ASC) on Thursday to being the series.

Nicole Garcia led the Patriots in the finale by going 3-for-4 from the leadoff spot, including smashing a home run on the second pitch of the game. The home run was her first of the season and she is now hitting .571 on the season with a team-leading 16 hits. UMHB would score two runs in the third to take the lead that it wouldn’t surrender again, despite UT Tyler making an effort in the sixth with Theresa Gonzales scoring an unearned run and then Hannah Moore hitting a leadoff home run in the seventh to cut the deficit to two. A pair of groundouts and a flyout would stop the Patriots in the last inning though.

UT Tyler junior Colleen Bentke (3-1) took the loss for the Patriots after allowing two runs on four hits in 2 2/3 innings. She would exit the game in the third and was relieved by Whitney Romero who allowed one run before Miranda Leal threw the final three innings. Ashley Perez, Andrea Gonzales, Lynsey Mitchell and Moore accounted for the eight UT Tyler, including Garcia’s three hits.

UT Tyler is now scheduled to host Sul Ross next weekend in what will be its home opener at Suddenlink Field after the prior two home dates have been postponed or canceled. The Patriots and Lobos will begin the series at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 10 with a doubleheader before playing the series finale at 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 11. UT Tyler will then host Concordia on March 13-14 in a rescheduling of the original home opener for the Patriots.
