ABILENE – The No. 3-ranked UT Tyler Patriots (5-0, 3-0 ASC) took the series finale 8-0 in five innings, sweeping the McMurry War Hawks (2-6, 0-3 ASC) in the American Southwest Conference opener on Sunday at Red Bud Park.

UT Tyler sophomore Whitney Romero (3-0) picked up her second victory of the weekend with 3 1/3 innings pitched. She held McMurry scoreless on just three hits and four strikeouts. Junior Colleen Bentke came in for relief work and had one strikeout with no hits allowed in 1 2/3 innings of action.

“I thought we improved each game of the series,” UT Tyler head coach Mike Reed said. “I thought offensively we worked hard to have good at bats every inning. We are working hard to continue to learn each other and to learn what this team’s identity is and will be. To open with five wins on the road is never easy.”

The Patriots put up runs early with a five spot in the second. It began on a leadoff single by Andrea Gonzales. Dariann Resendez was then hit by a pitch followed up by a walk of Lynsey Mitchell. Theresa Gonzales would pick up her lone RBI of the day on a fielder’s choice to shortstop, scoring Andrea Gonzales for the first run of the game. Resendez would reach third on the play on an error. Kailey Henderson would follow suit with an RBI fielder’s choice to shortstop as well, which scored Resendez. Henderson would end with two RBIs on the day, both on fielder’s choices. The scoring continued at the top of the lineup with a single by Nicole Garcia, followed up with a two-run double by Victoria Gonzales to make it 5-0.

Andrea Gonzales would start the third with her second straight leadoff hit, a double to right. Mitchell and Theresa Gonzales would hit back-to-back singles to load up the bases. Henderson would hit into another fielder’s choice, but Gonzales was gunned down at the plate. Hannah Moore followed up with a two-run single into center to extend the lead to 7-0.

The lone run of the fifth inning came on a Kailey Henderson sacrifice fly to score Resendez. Resendez reached base on an error to start the inning and advanced to third on a Theresa Gonzales single. Henderson then brought her home with a sacrifice fly to right.

The War Hawk offense was overpowered by the Patriots defense as they were just able to muster three hits on the day. Their only shot at offense on the day came in the fourth when they had runners on first and second with one out. That threat was quickly dealt with by Bentke who came on in relief and was able to force an inning-ending double play.

UT Tyler will have their home opener next weekend with a series against Concordia starting Friday, February 23. It could be a series with a lot of offensive fireworks with both teams undefeated in conference play. Concordia is coming off a series sweep of Hardin Simmons where they scored 35 runs over the three games. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Suddenlink Field.
