ABILENE - The UT Tyler softball team swept a doubleheader against McMurry winning 6-4 and 15-0 (5) on Saturday at Red Bud Park. The Patriots (4-0, 2-0 ASC) stayed unbeaten on the season while the War Hawks (2-5, 0-2 ASC) will be looking to avoid the series sweep in the finale at noon on Sunday.     

Game 1

UT Tyler softball came away with a 6-4 win in a back-and-forth conference opener at McMurry in the first game of the doubleheader. The game was a battle throughout, featuring five lead changes and three ties Freshman catcher Ashley Perez went 2-3 with a HR and two RBIS and also walked. Junior Pitcher Colleen Bentke pitched a near complete game with 6.2 innings hurled picking up the win. She moved to 2-0 on the year and threw nine strikeouts.

The scoring didn’t pick up until the bottom of the third with an RBI single by Kayla Otis to give the War Hawks a 1-0 lead. The Patriots responded immediately with a solo homerun by Perez to tie the game. Senior shortstop Hannah Moore gave the Patriots the lead on a sacrifice fly to center to score Dariann Resendez. McMurry came back in the bottom half of the fourth with an RBI single to tie it up at 2-2.

The Patriots came back in the top of the fifth with a leadoff single by Nicole Garcia. She moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a single by Andrea Gonzales. Perez picked up her second RBI of the game on a groundout to shortstop to score Garcia and made the score 3-2. McMurry reclaimed the lead 4-3 in the bottom half with a two-run home run by Otis after a leadoff single by first baseman Rachel Ripley.

UT Tyler fired back in the sixth taking advantages of opportunities given to them by the War Hawks. Senior Courtney Fisher, pinch hitting for Jaime, had a leadoff walk and Moore then reached on an error by Ripley. Jaime scored after returning to the game on a Kailey Henderson single to re-tie the game at 4-4. Victoria Gonzales gave the Patriots the lead for good with a sacrifice fly to center to score Moore. The Patriots would add an insurance run with an RBI double by Resendez in the seventh to make it 6-4.   

Game 2

The Patriots offense exploded in the second game of the doubleheader winning 15-0 in just five innings. Third baseman Theresa Gonzales finished 3-4 with a double, three RBIs, and scored three times. Sophomore Whitney Romero (2-0) picked up her second win of the year striking out seven in four innings pitched with just two hits allowed. Emily Deramus came in relief for one inning and finished with one strikeout and one base hit allowed.

UT Tyler jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning, jump started by an Ashley Perez three-run homerun. Theresa Gonzales has a two-run single into right field that scored her sister Andrea as well as Kailey Henderson. Victoria Gonzales would also have a single later in the inning that scored Theresa Gonzales.

The offensive dominance would continue into the second with the Patriots plating another five runs. Courtney Fisher opened up the scoring with a sacrifice fly to right. That would be followed up by back-to-back RBI singles by Theresa Gonzales and Natalie Garcia. Perez would pick up another RBI by earning a bases-loaded walk. Garcia would be the final run of the inning by scoring on a passed ball.

Makayla Dominguez had the lone run in the third with a sacrifice fly to center. Garcia added another RBI with a single to center, but was gunned down trying to stretch it to a double. The final run came off a solo homerun by Lynsey Mitchell in the fifth inning, her first as a Patriot.
