OKLAHOMA CITY – UT Tyler and Virginia Wesleyan will meet for the third time at 5 p.m. tonight in an elimination game at the NCAA Division III Softball Championships after the No. 1 Marlins stayed alive with a 5-2 win over the No. 4 Patriots in a noon game to start play on Sunday at the USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium Complex.

The winner between the Patriots (46-5) and Marlins (51-3) will advance to the NCAA DIII Championship Finals on Monday, while the loser will be eliminated. The teams have split their first two games here in OKC with the Patriots taking a 4-1 win in the opener on Thursday before dropping today’s game. UT Tyler faced the same situation last season when it won the first two games in the tournament before St. John Fisher forced the if-necessary game. The Patriots bounced back in that one to advance to the finals and went on to win the NCAA DIII National Championship.

The Patriots are back in that same game tonight after being limited to two hits by VWC’s Courtney Wright who earned the complete-game win where Teresa Cardomone hit a three-run homer in the first inning for the Marlins. Wright allowed a Hannah Moore double in the second inning after Bianca Van Vlerah walked. That set up the only runs of the game for the Patriots when Whitney Romero hit a single up the middle of the infield for two RBI. VWC added two runs of insurance in the sixth before Wright closed out a 106-pitch performance by getting a line out to short stop to end the game.

Romero led the Patriots by going 1-for-3 with the two RBI, while Moore hit her 12th double of the season and also finished the game 1-for-3. Alaina Kissinger (26-3) allowed only one hit, but took the loss after allowing three walks and the three-run home run by Cardomone. Kissinger threw only 55 pitches in the game before Romero came in for 3 2/3 innings of relief where she struck out three and scattered five hits in a 95-pitch outing. She would allow the two runs in the sixth with Miranda Leal coming in to get the final four outs in her 17th relief appearance of the season.

UT Tyler is now 2-1 in the NCAA DIII Championship this week with a 4-1 win over VWC in the opener before a 13-0 win over Amherst on Friday. The loss to the Marlins takes UT Tyler's all-time record in the tournament to 15-10 going into tonight's game where they are looking to advance to their third straight finals. Virginia Wesleyan is now 3-1 this week in OKC with three straight elimination-game wins and is looking for its first trip to the finals in its program's history.
