The Patriots (44-4) lead the nation with a .389 team batting average, .983 fielding percentage, .577 slugging percentage and are the defending NCAA DIII National Champions who are outscoring opponents by a 374-89 margin this season. UT Tyler’s title in 2016 followed being the 2015 NCAA DIII national runner-up for the program that started playing in 2005 and has made 10 straight NCAA appearances. The program is 13-9 all-time in the championship tournament with appearances in 2016, 2015, 2013, 2011 and 2009. UT Tyler was 5-1 in Salem, Virginia last season, capped by a 7-0 win over Messiah to win the first national title in program history.

The Marlins (48-2) advanced with two wins over Kean in their Super Regional and are the top-ranked team in the NFCA poll. UT Tyler and Virginia Wesleyan will be meeting for the first time ever with the winner advancing to play at 6:30 p.m. on Friday against the winner of the Trine and Amherst game on INTEGRIS Field. The losing teams will meet in an 11 a.m. elimination game. On the other side of the bracket, Illinois Wesleyan will take on St. Catherine and St. John Fisher plays Williams College. The championship final is set for 1 p.m. on Monday, May 30 on the OGE Energy Field.

The Patriots advanced to this year’s championship after going through La Verne and No. 5 Texas Lutheran in the Tyler Regional and then sweeping No. 10 East Texas Baptist last weekend in the Tyler Super Regional at Suddenlink Field. UT Tyler will be playing away from home for the first time since sweeping a three-game series at Louisiana College on April 13-14 after the team hosted the American Southwest Conference tournament and the two regional rounds.

UT Tyler leadoff hitter Kaylee Prather leads the nation with 83 hits and is at .503 entering Oklahoma City. A senior center fielder from Elysian Fields, Prather has 11 doubles, five triples, two home runs, 65 singles and 63 runs scored this season. She is 38-for-39 on stolen bases this season and is the program’s all-time leader with 75 stolen bases after transferring in as a junior. Prather is a career .467 hitter with 154 hits in 330 at-bats and 102 games played for the Patriots. She was named the ASC Player of the Year, to the NFCA All-Region team and is a CoSIDA All-America third-team selection.

KK Stevens leads the Patriots with 14 home runs this season and comes into the week with a .388 batting average and 52 RBI. A senior from Plano, Stevens has started 202 games at catcher for the Patriots and has 204 hits in her career. She is a three-time NFCA all-region performer with a .371 career batting average and only two errors behind the plate with 1,016 putouts and 43 assists. Cheyenne Thompson is tied with Stevens for the team lead with 52 RBI in her sophomore season. UT Tyler’s right fielder is hitting .426 with 18 doubles, two triples, eight home runs to produce the 52 RBI. She also has 14 stolen bases and three outfield assists.

Andrea Gonzales is in her first season with the Patriots after transferring in as a junior and is hitting .426 with 16 doubles, one home run and 41 RBI as the team’s first baseman. Mel Hinojosa enters Oklahoma with a .385 batting average and 37 RBI and leads the team by being hit by 11 pitches this season, while Lexi Ackroyd is hitting .364 with 47 hits, 28 RBI and 35 runs scored. At second base, Bianca Van Vlerah is hitting .352 with 50 total hits that have produced 31 RBI. A senior in her second season at UT Tyler, Van Vlerah has scored 39 runs and has a .970 fielding percentage. A short stop, Hannah Moore has made only three errors with 52 putouts and 46 assists and is also hitting .316 with 11 doubles, two triples, four home runs and 35 RBI. Whitney Romero, who had only two at-bats entering the regional tournament, is now hitting .444 with eight hits – two being home runs – and has six RBI in 18 at-bats.

A freshman from Louisiana, Romero is also 14-1 as a pitcher for the Patriots with 77 strikeouts and a 1.26 ERA in 94 1/3 innings of work. Alaina Kissinger (24-2) leads UT Tyler in the pitcher’s circle with 96 strikeouts entering OKC. She is a four-time all-conference selection and is the program’s leader by limiting opponents to a .182 batting average throughout her career. She was named the Tyler Super Regional Most Outstanding Pitcher after throwing a complete-game in the first game of the tournament against ETBU. Miranda Leal earned the win in relief of the Tyler Super Regional final and enters this week with a 6-1 record. A freshman from San Antonio, Leal has recorded 24 strikeouts in 16 appearances and 46 2/3 innings. She has made one start and has a 2.85 ERA.

UT Tyler is led by head coach Mike Reed who is 618-138 in his career. He is the only coach in program history having come to Tyler in 2004 and playing for the first time in 2005. Reed started his career with three season at ETBU and is 513-107 at UT Tyler. Reed and his coaching staff were named the 2016 NFCA National Coaching Staff of the Year. The program has seven 40-plus win seasons, including a 50-win 2015 year and going 49-5 during last year’s title run. The four losses this season are the least in program history.
