TYLER – UT Tyler senior catcher KK Stevens hit a pair of home runs to lead the Patriots to an 8-2 victory over Louisiana College on the opening day of the American Southwest Conference tournament Thursday at Suddenlink Field.

The No. 2 Patriots, who won their 22nd consecutive game and improved to 38-2 this season, will face UT Dallas in a semifinal game at 4 p.m. on Friday.

Stevens’ first home run of the game came in the bottom of the first inning and gave the Patriots an early 2-0 lead.

“I saw a good pitch and put a good swing on it,” Stevens said. “It was exciting. It is always fun to come home to your teammates like that to get to help the team in any way possible.”

The two-run first inning put the Patriots in control and by the end of the third, they led 4-0 following an RBI double by Kaylee Prather in the second and then Stevens’ second home run of the game in the third.

“To be able to come out in the first three and go up 4-0, it allows everyone to take a deep breath,” UT Tyler head coach Mike Reed said. “When they got those two, then those four made a huge difference. Being able to gain the momentum early allowed all of us to relax in our first postseason game.”

Louisiana College scored a pair in the top of the fourth to briefly cut the UT Tyler lead to 4-2. The Patriots then scored four times in the bottom of the fifth to put the game out of reach.

Lexi Ackroyd drew a bases-loaded walk, Bianca Van Vlerah had an RBI single, Abby Frame scored on a passed ball and Hannah Moore had a sacrifice fly to put the Patriots up 8-2 after five.

Alaina Kissinger started in the circle and earned her 21st win of the season. The senior allowed two runs on five hits and struck out three in four and two-thirds innings. Miranda Leal pitched the final two and one-third innings, allowing just two hits.

“Alaina was really good from the start,” Reed said. “She ran into a little hiccup there in that one inning. Miranda has been so good for us and she pitched so well against them down there and they had been through the lineup a couple of times and they had their 1-2-3 up again. We just wanted to give the top of their lineup a different look.”

Prather, Stevens and Mel Hinojosa each had two hits for the Patriots. Stevens had three RBIs.

The Patriots swept UT Dallas when the teams met at Suddenlink Field March 25 and 26. The Comets came into the tournament ranked No. 12 in the country. UT Dallas defeated Concordia 5-0 to open the tournament on Friday and then upset No. 10 East Texas Baptist 5-2 to advance to the semifinals.

“I am excited,” Reed said. “In the postseason, you have to survive and advance. We know UT Dallas is a good team but I feel good about where we are at.”
