TYLER – The No. 2 UT Tyler softball team swept Sul Ross State in a Senior Day doubleheader on Saturday at Suddenlink Field.

The Patriots defeated the Lobos 10-2 and 5-1 to run their winning streak to 21 games while improving to 37-2 overall and 28-2 in the American Southwest Conference.

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Patriots fell behind 2-0 after the top of the first inning, but came right back in the bottom of the frame.

Kaylee Prather scored on a wild pitch and KK Stevens scored on a single by Mel Hinojosa to tie the game at 2-2 after the first inning.

The Patriots put up seven runs in the second to pull away from the Lobos. Kursten Jaime scored on a single by Cheyenne Thompson, Thompson and Alyssa Henry scored on a double by Andrea Gonzales, Stevens and Kailey Henderson scored on a home run by Hinojosa and Lexi Ackroyd scored on a double by Hanna Moore to put UT Tyer ahead 9-2 after two innings.

The Patriots added one more run in the third on a solo home run by Thompson, her seventh of the season.

In the circle, Whitney Romero picked up the win, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out four to improve to 13-1 this season.

Offensively for UT Tyler, Thompson, Gonzales and Hinojosa each had two hits. Hinojosa had four RBIs while Thompson and Gonzales each had two.

In the second game, the Patriots fell behind 1-0 after the top of the third inning, but answered with three in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-1 lead.

Hinojosa and Thompson both scored when Van Vlerah singled and advanced on an error. Van Vlerah then scored on a single by Lexi Ackroyd.

The Patriots added a run in the fourth when Prather scored on a single by Gonzales and another in the fifth when Kailey Henderson scored on a double by Ackroyd.

Alaina Kissinger picked up the win in the circle, allowing a run on five hits while striking out six in four and two-thirds innings to improve to 20-0 on the season.

Miranda Leal pitched the final two and one-third innings, allowing no hits and striking out three.

Offensively, the Patriots were led by Ackroyd, who had three hits and drove in two. Van Vlerah had two hits.

Seniors Prather, Hinojosa, Kissinger, Ackroyd, Van Vlerah and Stevens were all honored between games for their contributions to the UT Tyler program.

The Patriots will be back in action Thursday at 7 p.m. in the ASC postseason tournament against a team to be determined at Suddenlink Field.
