TYLER -- The No. 2 UT Tyler softball team opened a three-game American Southwest Conference series against No. 16 UT Dallas with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday, winning 7-0 and 5-1 at Suddenlink Field.

With the wins, the Patriots improved to 24-2 overall and 15-2 in the ASC.

In the first game, the Patriots struck first with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Hannah Moore doubled home Lexi Ackroyd to give UT Tyler a 1-0 lead.

That would be the only run the Patriots would need, but they got plenty more. In the bottom of the fifth, Mel Hinojosa singled home Kaylee Prather to make it 2-0.

UT Tyler put the game out of reach in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five times to go ahead 7-0.

Andrea Gonzales started the scoring by doubling home Hannah Moore and Ackroyd. Gonzales then scored on a single by Bianca Van Vlerah. Prather scored on a groundout by KK Stevens before Hinojosa singled home Van Vlerah to make it 7-0.

Alaina Kissinger picked up the win for the Patriots in the circle. Kissinger (13-0) allowed no runs on seven hits and struck out two in seven innings.

Offensively, Ackroyd led the Patriots with three hits. Moore and Hinojosa each had two. Hinojosa and Gonzales each drove in two runs.

In the second game, the Patriots again struck first early.

Stevens hit her team-leading eighth home run of the season to give UT Tyler a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. The Patriots added two more in the inning when Kursten Jaime scored on an error and Ackroyd scored on a single by Prather to make it 3-0.

UT Dallas got a run in the third to cut the UT Tyler lead to 3-1. It was the first run allowed by the Patriots since March 9 and snapped a string of six straight shutouts.

UT Tyler added two more runs in the sixth on a two-run single by Moore to make it 5-1.

Whitney Romero picked up the win for UT Tyler in the circle. Romero (9-1) allowed a run on six hits and struck out five.

Offensively, Stevens and Ackroyd each had two hits for the Patriots while Moore drove in a pair.

The Patriots and Comets will conclude their series with a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday at Suddenlink Field.
