TYLER – The No. 2 UT Tyler softball team completed a sweep of its three-game American Southwest Conference series against Howard Payne with an 8-0 victory on Saturday at Suddenlink Field.

The Patriots outscored the Yellowjackets 35-0 in the three-game set and improved to 22-2 overall and 13-2 in the ASC.

UT Tyler got the scoring started early with four runs in the top of the first inning. The Patriots loaded the bases and Mel Hinojosa drew a walk that allowed Kaylee Prather to score. Then, with the bases still loaded, Lexi Ackroyd cleared them with a double. Cheyenne Thompson, KK Stevens and Hinojosa all scored to give the Patriots a 4-0 lead.

The Patriots added two more runs in the third. Hannah Moore doubled home Kursten Jaime and Andrea Gonzales singled home Kailey Henderson to make it 6-0.

UT Tyler added a run in the fourth on a solo home run by Thompson, her sixth of the season, and then scored the game-winner in the fifth when Jaime scored on a single by Gonzales.

Alaina Kissinger got the win in the circle for the Patriots. Kissinger allowed no hits and struck out three in four innings to improve to 12-0. Miranda Leal pitched the fifth, giving up three hits but no runs and striking out one.

Offensively, Thompson had three hits to lead the Patriots. Ackroyd and Gonzales each had two. Ackroyd had three RBIs and Gonzales two.

The Patriots will return to action next weekend when they host UT Dallas. The three-game series will begin with a single game on Friday at 6 p.m. and conclude with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
