TYLER – The No. 2 UT Tyler softball team opened a three-game American Southwest Conference series against Howard-Payne with a doubleheader sweep on Friday, winning 10-0 (6) and 17-0 (5) at Suddenlink Field.

The Patriots improved to 21-2 overall and 12-2 in the ASC with the wins.

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Patriots struck first with three runs in the bottom of the opening inning. KK Stevens and Cheyenne Thompson scored on an error and Courtney Fisher scored on a single by Mel Hinojosa to give UT Tyler a 3-0 lead.

The Patriots added a run in the bottom of the second when Bianca Van Vlerah singled home Kaylee Prather. UT Tyler increased its lead more in the bottom of the fourth when Prather scored on a sacrifice fly by Stevens and Van Vlerah scored on a single by Hinojosa to make it 6-0.

In the bottom of the sixth, Lexi Ackroyd singled home Natalie Romeo to give the Patriots a 7-0 lead and then Hannah Moore hit a three-run home run to make it 10-0 and force an early end to the game.

Alaina Kissinger (11-0) got the win for UT Tyler in the circle. Kissinger gave up just three hits and struck out seven in six innings.

Offensively for the Patriots, Prather, Van Vlerah and Hinojosa each had two hits. Moore led the team with three RBIs.

In the second game, UT Tyler got all the runs they would need in the first inning. Prather scored on a single by Van Vlerah, Van Vlerah scored on a double by Cheyenne Thompson, Thompson scored on a single by Stevens and Moore drove home Hinojosa and Kursten Jaime to give the Patriots a 5-0 lead after one inning.

The Patriots added eight more run in the second inning. Jaime hit a two-run home run after Thompson doubled, Ackroyd singled home Kailey Henderson, Van Vlerah singled home Andrea Gonzales and Moore, Thompson doubled home Van Vlerah and Prather and Stevens doubled home Thompson to make it 13-0 after two innings.

UT Tyler finished its scoring with four runs in the fourth. Ryata Daniel scored on a single by Hinojosa, Stevens scored on a single by Omni Garcia, Hinojosa scored on a single by Gonzales and Ashley Cook scored on a single by Abby Frame to make it 17-0.

Whitney Romero (8-1) picked up the win in the circle for the Patriots. Romero allowed just one hit and struck out seven in five innings.

Offensively, Thompson and Hinojosa each had three hits for the Patriots. Van Vlerah and Stevens each had two. Thompson and Van Vlerah each drove in three runs. Stevens, Jaime and Moore each had two RBIs.

The Patriots have won each of their last four games by shutout and have outscored their opponents 46-0 over that span.

The teams will conclude their three-game series with a single game at Noon on Saturday at Suddenlink Field.
