MARSHALL – The No. 1-ranked UT Tyler softball team and No. 3 East Texas Baptist split an American Southwest Conference doubleheader with the Patriots earning a 2-1 win in the opener and the Tigers taking a 3-2 win in extra innings to even the series on Wednesday at Taylor Field.

The Patriots (16-2, 9-2 ASC) and Tigers (15-1, 10-1 ASC) will conclude the series with a 5 p.m. game on Thursday back in Marshall.

UT Tyler senior Alaina Kissinger threw a three-hit complete game with KK Stevens and Hannah Moore driving in runs with sacrifice flies to lead the Patriots to the 2-1 series opening win to start the day.

UT Tyler (16-1, 9-1 ASC) was limited to four hits in the game against the Tigers (14-1, 9-1 ASC), but would take advantage of those opportunities with runs in the fourth and seventh innings. The Patriots broke a scoreless game in the fourth with Bianca Van Vlerah hitting a one-out single and moving to third on a double by Cheyenne Thompson. Still with one out, Stevens pulled a ball to right field and Van Vlerah tagged and scored.

Kissinger was cruising and didn’t allow her first hit until the fourth. The Patriot pitcher would go through five innings unharmed before Lacey Lindsey hit a two-out home run that curled around the left-field pole to tie the game.

UT Tyler senior Mel Hinojosa would answer quickly though with a single to start the seventh and came off the field to cheering teammates with Kursten Jaime taking over as a pinch runner. Jaime would move over to second base on a Lexi Ackroyd sacrifice bunt and then to third base when Andrea Gonzales hit a single just inside fair territory beyond the dirt behind first base. With one out, Moore flied out to center field with Jaime tagging up and scoring for the game-winning run.

Van Vlerah, Thompson, Hinojosa and Gonzales accounted for the four hits in the game for the Patriots, while Kissinger improved to 9-0 on the season with the win. Rocki Tello (7-1) took the loss for the Tigers despite allowing just the four hits and two runs.

Lindsey Vasquez would win the game for ETBU in the second game with an RBI double to left field in the eighth inning to even the series. Whitney Romero (6-1) took her only loss of the season despite striking out three and limiting the Tigers to three runs. Lexi Ackroyd gave the Patriots a 1-0 lead in the second inning with an RBI single to left field and would drive in another run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth for the two UT Tyler runs. The Patriots led 2-1 going in the bottom of the fifth where Linzie Lewis tied it with a home run before the teams had three scoreless innings. Ackroyd was 1-for-2 with her two RBI in the game.

Prather led the Patriots in the second game by going 2-for-4 at the plate, while Van Vlerah, Thompson and Courtney Fisher also had hits.
