TYLER – The No. 1 UT Tyler softball team split a doubleheader with Mary Hardin-Baylor Saturday at Suddenlink Field, winning 12-10 before losing their first game of the season, 12-8, in the nightcap.

The loss was the first by the Patriots in American Southwest Conference play since they were defeated by East Texas Baptist on March 30, 2015.

By splitting the series, the Patriots are now 15-1 overall and 8-1 in the ASC. UMHB is now 10-6 and 5-6.

In the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, the Crusaders took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Patriots answered with a three-run home run by KK Stevens, her fourth of the season, to go ahead 3-1.

UMHB pulled within 3-2 in the top of the second and then took a 5-3 lead with three runs in the top of the third. The Patriots answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of third on a two-run home run by Mel Hinojosa, her first of the season, to tie the game at 5-5.

The Crusaders retook the lead with a run in the top of the fourth, but the Patriots plated two in the bottom of the inning to take it right back. Lexi Ackroyd doubled home Kailey Henderson and Hinojosa singled home Ackroyd to make it 7-6.

UT Tyler extended its lead in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run home run by Cheyenne Thompson, her fourth of the season, to go ahead 9-6.

UMHB then scored four in the top of the sixth to go ahead 10-9, becoming the first team to score 10 runs against UT Tyler since Hardin-Simmons did it in 2013. But just as they had the entire game, the Patriots had an answer.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, pinch hitter Hannah Moore slammed a three-run home run to account for the final scoring of the game.

Miranda Leal picked up the win in relief. She gave up five runs on eight hits in four and one-third innings to earn her second win of the season.

Kaylee Prather, Van Vlerah, Ackroyd and Hinojosa each had two hits for the Patriots. Stevens, Hinojosa and Moore each had three RBIs.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Crusaders again scored first, plating a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. The Patriots got one back in the bottom of the inning when Van Vlerah scored on a triple by Thompson.

UMHB scored five in the top of the fourth to go ahead 6-1. UT Tyler cut the lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the inning when Henderson scored on an error.

The Patriots scored three in the bottom of the fifth to pull within 6-5. Courtney Fisher singled home Courtney Meier, Hinojosa scored on a sacrifice fly by Abby Hall and Fisher scored on a single by Moore.

The Crusaders, however, added to their lead in the top of the sixth, scoring three times to go ahead 9-5. The Patriots got two back in the bottom of the inning when Thompson scored on a wild pitch and Hinojosa scored on a double by Fisher to make it 9-7.

UMHB extended its lead again with three in the top of the seventh to go ahead 12-7. UT Tyler managed only one run in the final frame of the game when Prather scored on an error.

Leal started the game and took the loss. She went three and one-third innings, allowing five runs on five hits.

Fisher led the Patriots’ offense with three hits and two RBIs. Van Vlerah and Thompson each had two hits.

The Patriots won’t have much time off as they will travel to Marshall on Tuesday to begin a three-game series with No. 3 ETBU.
