TYLER – The No. 1-ranked UT Tyler softball team kept its perfect season intact despite having to come from behind on Friday at Suddenlink Field.

The Patriots improved to 14-0 overall this season and 7-0 in the American Southwest Conference with an 8-4 victory over Mary Hardin-Baylor (9-6, 4-6) in the series opener.

UT Tyler fell behind early, spotting the Crusaders two runs in the top of the first inning. The Patriots got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning on a leadoff solo home run by Kaylee Prather.

Mary Hardin-Baylor extended its lead to 4-1 with a pair of runs in the top of the second, but the Patriots answered with three in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at 4-4. Courtney Meier scored on a single by Prather and then Prather and Mel Hinojosa scored on a double by Bianca Van Vlerah.

The Patriots took the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Nicole Romeo scored on a sacrifice fly by Van Vlerah and Prather scored on a groundout by Cheyenne Thompson to make it 6-4.

UT Tyler extended its lead to 7-4 in the bottom of the fifth when Courtney Fisher scored on a single by Abby Hall and then to 8-4 in the bottom of the sixth when Prather scored on a double steal play.

Prather led the Patriots’ offense, going 4-4 with a pair of RBIs and her first home run of the season. Van Vlerah was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and Fisher went 3-for-3.

Whitney Romero earned the win in the circle for UT Tyler. The freshman came on in relief of Alaina Kissinger in the second inning and gave up just three hits and struck out three in six innings to improve to 6-0. Kissinger gave up four runs on four hits in an inning of work.

The teams will conclude their series with a pair of games tomorrow. The first will begin at 1 p.m. with the second game scheduled for 3 p.m.
