TYLER – The No. 1-ranked UT Tyler softball team returns to American Southwest Conference play this weekend when it travels to Longview to play LeTourneau in a three-game set on Friday and Saturday at the Joyce Family Athletic Complex after earning a pair of 9-0 wins on Tuesday at Trinity.

The Patriots (10-0, 3-0 ASC) started conference play two weeks ago by sweeping Hardin-Simmons in Abilene and come into this weekend having outscored their opponents by a 91-11 margin this season. LeTourneau (3-6, 1-5 ASC) are on a five-game losing streak after being swept by No. 4 East Texas Baptist last weekend. UT Tyler has already recorded six shutouts and have only had to play a full game once with the other nine being run-rule shortened.  

UT Tyler pitchers Alaina Kissinger and Whitney Romero both threw one-hit shutouts on Tuesday in the wins over Trinity. Kissinger (6-0) earned the 50th win of her career and has allowed only four runs this season and has 19 strikeouts in 34 2/3 innings of work. Romero has a 0.00 ERA and has allowed only 11 hits in 22 innings in her freshman season.

Cheyenne Thompson leads the Patriots with a .606 batting average that includes 20 hits with five doubles and three home runs. A sophomore from Mexia, Thompson leads the team with 19 RBI. Kaylee Prather has added 19 hits with two triples and two doubles and leaded the Patriots with 15 runs scored through 10 games. Prather is 11-for-12 on stolen base attempts and has nine RBI. KK Stevens had two home runs last weekend and is tied for the team lead with three this season. A senior catcher from Plano, Stevens is hitting .467 with 14 hits and 15 RBI while Bianca Van Vlerah has 13 hits and eight RBI. Van Vlerah is a senior second baseman from Austin who has scored 13 runs and has four doubles.

Andrea Gonzales and Mel Hinojosa also have four doubles and 10 total hits for the Patriots who have 25 doubles, two triples and six home runs this season. UT Tyler has an impressive .419 team batting average while opponents are hitting .190.

The Patriots will return home to play Mary Hardin-Baylor next weekend in a three-game series at Suddenlink Field. The Cru (9-2, 4-2 ASC) hosts ETBU this weekend before traveling to Tyler.
