TYLER – The No. 1 UT Tyler Patriots took both games of the Saturday doubleheader against the Belhaven Blazers to sweep the three-game series at Suddenlink Field. The Patriots won the games 8-0, 5-1, respectively to take their winning streak to eight to start the season.

Game 1: Patriots 8 Blazers 0 (F/6)

Much like the previous game on Friday night, there was no scoring early on. The Blazers had chances to get on the board with hits in each of the first four innings. Kaitlyn Blubaugh left off the third with a single to left field and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Makyla Reed. But a groundout and a strikeout ended the threat. The Blazers would go 0-3 with RISP for the game.

The Patriots again exploded for a big inning with all 8 runs coming in the bottom of the fourth. Cheyenne Thompson led it off with a double into center field and went to third on the next at-bat by wild pitch. Andrea Gonzales would have a sacrifice fly into left, driving in Thompson to give UT Tyler a 1-0 lead. KK Stevens followed with a single and was replaced for pinch running duties by Kursten Jaime, who would steal second. Back-to-back singles by Mel Hinojosa and Lexi Ackroyd would bring in another run for a 2-0 lead.

Abby Hall was next with a single into shallow center and advanced all the runner up a base with a throwing error to third. Hannah Moore came in to pinch hit and a dropped fly ball in right field scored another run making it 4-0. With Prather at the plate, a double steal by Natalie Romeo and Courtney Meir brought the lead to five runs. This brought in Valiree Blair in for relief for the Blazers.

A double by Bianca Van Vlerah brought in two more runs and the eighth and final run came off an RBI single by KK Stevens, her 13th RBI of the year, that scored Van Vlerah.

Freshman Whitney Romero led herself to a complete game shutout with 5.0 innings pitched. She only allowed four hits and she struck out five with one walk. She improved to 3-0 on the season.

Game 2: Patriots 5 Blazers 1

The Patriots finished off the sweep with their closest game of the season in a 5-1 victory. Alaina Kissinger (5-0) led the way for the Patriots with a complete game. In 7 innings pitched she only gave up one run on four hits with no walks or strikeouts.

The Patriots jumped out to early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an Andrea Gonzales single into left. An error on the bounce allowed Thompson to score.

The Blazers quickly bounced back in the second with a one out homer by Crystal Kehtel to draw even at one.

It remained tied until the bottom of the fifth when a Van Vlerah double scored Prather to make it 2-1. KK Stevens would score Van Vlerah on a single to make it 3-1. A double by Prather in the sixth would score Henderson and Ackroyd for the final two runs of the game.
