TYLER – There are explosive innings. And then there’s what the No. 1 UT Tyler (6-0, 3-0) Patriots did in the bottom of the sixth in the opener of a three-game series.

The Patriots put up an incredible 13 runs in the inning to end the game with a 13-2 win over the Belhaven Blazers (0-5). It was an inning that featured 11 hits, three home runs, and two grand slams.

The game started quickly with both pitchers bringing their best. The first hit of the game came off a Bianca Van Vlerah single to center in the bottom of the 4th. She would be thrown out at second on the next-at bat with fielder’s choice by Cheyenne Thompson, but she would advance no further.

Belhaven struck first in the top of the fifth starting with an infield single by Savannah Lyon. Kaitlyn Blubaugh followed up with a single of her own to center, advancing to second on the throw with Lyon sliding into third. With two outs, Megan Goss broke open the scoring with a double to center, making it 2-0.

The bottom of the sixth started with 9 consecutive hits and opened with a pinch-hit single by Abby Hall. It was followed by two more singles by Kaylee Prather and Van Vlerah. With bases loaded and nobody out, Thompson came to the plate and belted a grand slam, her 3rd homer of the season, to put UT Tyler in front 4-2. She would finish with 5 RBIs.

Next up was an Andrea Gonzales double to center and followed by a 2-run homer run by KK Stevens. This finally chased away the Belhaven starter Valiree Blair (0-3) from the game. Reliever Lauren Feagin came in to replace, but the Patriots still found success with back to back singles by Mel Hinojosa and Courtney Fisher, then a double by Lexi Ackroyd. After an RBI groundout by Prather and an RBI single by Thompson, Gonzales would walk to load the bases.

KK Stevens returned to the plate and belted her second home run of the inning, game-winning grand slam to bring home the 13-2 win. Stevens would finish with 6 RBIs off the two homers

Alaina Kissinger (4-0) would pitch a complete game for her fourth victory for the Patriots, going 6.0 innings with two runs on three hits and struck out five.

The Patriots face the Blazers on Saturday in a DH with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. at Suddenlink Field.
