PINEVILLE, La. – The No. 2 UT Tyler softball team rallied from a 3-1 deficit to defeat Louisiana College 4-3 in nine innings and clinch at least a share of the American Southwest Conference regular-season championship on Friday at Wildcat Park.

KK Stevens singled home Kaylee Prather with the winning run in the top of the ninth to complete a three-game sweep of the Wildcats. The Patriots won Friday’s first game 2-1 and extended their winning streak to 18 games.

The Patriots improved to 34-2 overall and 25-2 in the ASC. They are three games ahead of East Texas Baptist with three games to play. UT Tyler earned the right to host the postseason tournament because even if the Tigers managed to tie the Patriots in the standings after next weekend’s games, UT Tyler holds a 2-1 advantage in head-to-head play.

In other words, UT Tyler needs one win next weekend against Sul Ross State to clinch their fourth straight outright conference championship.

In the first game of Friday’s doubleheader, the Wildcats took 1 -0 lead in the bottom of the first against UT Tyler starter Whitney Romero. The Patriots tied the game in the top of the third on a solo home run by Stevens, her 10th of the season.

In the top of the sixth, UT Tyler’s Cheyenne Thompson doubled home Mel Hinojosa for what would turn out to be the winning run.

Romero earned the win in the circle for the Patriots. The freshman improved to 12-1 by allowing a run on five hits and striking out six while walking none.

Offensively, Hinojosa and Thompson each had two hits to lead UT Tyler. Senior Kaylee Prather went 0-4 and saw her 17-game hitting streak come to an end.

In the second game, the Patriots took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on a single by Stevens that scored Alyssa Henry. The Wildcats scored three in the bottom of the inning to go ahead 3-1.

UT Tyler tied the game at 3-3 with two runs in the top of the fifth. Andrea Gonzales singled home Abby Frame and Stevens. The game remained tied until the ninth when Prather led off with a bunt single and scored on a one-out single by Stevens.

Miranda Leal picked up the win in relief for UT Tyler. Leal relieved Alaina Kissinger in the third inning and allowed only three hits in seven shutout innings. She struck out six to improve to 4-1 on the season.

Stevens led the Patriots’ offense with three hits and two RBIs. Prather and Gonzales each had two hits while Gonzales also had two RBIs.

The Patriots will play their final series of the season next weekend against the Lobos. The series will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and conclude with a doubleheader beginning at noon on Saturday. All games will be at Suddenlink Field.
