HOUSTON -- In each of his three years on the men's golf team at the University of Texas at Tyler, former Dulles product Joey Rippel has won the Patriot Award, which is based on a combination of golf, academics and attitude.
That honor typifies Rippel, a cancer survivor who helped start The Rippel Effect in 2008. It's a nonprofit charity that helps cancer-stricken teenagers before and after medical treatments.
Rippel was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in October 2007.
"I was going to attack (cancer) head on," said Rippel. "I never thought of it as being life-threatening. I saw it as a speed bump in life. It's made me who I am and put me at UT-Tyler."
