TYLER – The No. 3-ranked UT Tyler softball team earned an 8-0 midweek non-conference win over the Centenary Ladies (6-3) in five innings on Tuesday at Suddenlink Field. Colleen Bentke (3-1) pitched a complete-game shutout while only giving up one hit with seven strikeouts in the home opener for the Patriots who improved to 8-1 with the win.

UT Tyler freshman Ashley Perez had another big night, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and two more RBI to add to her team-leading 19 on the season.

“Going into the season, I knew I had my team behind me,” Perez said. “The team is starting the season strong, both offense and defense.”

Both of her doubles scored Nicole Garcia who went 3-for-4 and scored two of the eight Patriot runs. Garcia is batting .594, which leads the team through nine games. Andrea and Theresa Gonzales both finished the night with a pair of base hits and an RBI. Theresa Gonzales had the game-ending single up the middle in the bottom of the fifth to score Kursten Jaime.

The Patriots return to action at Suddenlink Field with a weekend conference series against Sul Ross. A doubleheader will be played on Saturday with the first game starting at 1 p.m. before an 11 a.m. finale on Sunday at Suddenlink Field.
