TYLER – The No. 3-ranked UT Tyler softball team will host Centenary College at 7 p.m. on Tuesday a non-conference game at Suddenlink Field. The game was added on Monday and makes up for last week’s cancellations that were forced due to weather.

The Patriots (7-1) will be making their home debut after a season that has been affected throughout by weather. The team was originally going to play their home openers two weeks ago against Concordia, but had it canceled. They were then going to play Millikin, but had that canceled. Now, with good weather in the forecasts, the Patriots are scheduled to play the Ladies (6-2) on Tuesday before welcoming Sul Ross to Tyler for a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday at Suddenlink Field and then Concordia next Tuesday and Wednesday which will wind up ending a seven-game home stand.

UT Tyler is coming off an ASC series win over Mary Hardin-Baylor last weekend where it took two of three from the Cru in Belton. The Patriots dropped the series finale for their only loss of the season and enter this week with an impressive .377 team batting average and having outscored their opponents by a 68-15 margin through eight games.

Nicole Garcia leads the team with a .571 batting average and 16 hits from the leadoff spot of the lineup, while Ashley Perez tops the team with 17 RBI and is hitting .480 with three home runs and three doubles. Garcia is a junior who transferred from Blinn College along with starting pitcher Colleen Bentke (3-1). A left-handed pitcher, Bentke has an impressive 0.84 ERA and 23 strikeouts through her first 25 innings of work as a Patriot. Whitney Romero (4-0) remains unbeaten in the circle to start her sophomore season and is 18-1 in her career.

UT Tyler senior Andrea Gonzales has started her second year with the Patriots by hitting .444 with 12 hits, while her sisters Victoria and Theresa Gonzales have 19 hits combined in their first seasons at UT Tyler. Victoria Gonzales is hitting .417 and is second on the team with 11 RBI, while Theresa Gonzales is hitting .375 with five RBI. As a team, the Patriots have hit seven home runs through eight games with Perez leading the team with three and Garcia, Lynsey Mitchell, Victoria Gonzales and Hannah Moore having one each. Moore has five RBI on the season along with fellow senior Kailey Henderson who has two doubles.

UT Tyler will open its ASC series against Sul Ross with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday before an 11 a.m. series finale on Sunday. The Patriots are coming off a 2017 season where they were 21-1 on their home field and are 12-1 all-time in home openers.
