SEGUIN – UT Tyler senior pitcher Ryan Cheatham threw seven scoreless innings and Alex Bishop and Bowie Farris each drove in three runs to help lead the Patriots to an 11-4 win over previously unbeaten Texas Lutheran in the series opener on Friday at Katt-Isbel Field.

The Patriots (5-3) and Bulldogs (9-1) will continue the series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday in Seguin.

Cheatham (1-1) cruised in his third start of his senior season where he struck out four and allowed only three hits against the Bulldogs through seven innings. UT Tyler led 9-0 before Cheatham’s night ended with Alexander Masotto entering the game in the eighth where he struck out the first three batters he faced. TLU would score four runs in the ninth off Masotto before Sam Sitton came in to record three outs without allowing a hit.

UT Tyler jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the second inning with Zach Pavelock driving in the first run of the game on a single down the left-field line, followed by Bowie Farris grounding out to the pitcher on but bringing home another run and then Blake Wilson driving in Pavelock with an RBI single to center field. With Cheatham making easy work of the Bulldogs throughout the night, the 3-0 lead would prove to be all that was needed but it was built upon in the later stages of the game starting with Brady Usherwood driving in a run in the seventh and then the Patriots scoring five runs on three hits in the top of the eighth. The big inning started with a Graham Welch and Blake Maddox walk that would be capitalized on with an Alex Bishop two-run single to center field which was followed by a two-run Farris double to left field. Wilson would cap the inning with his second RBI of the night on a single to left field to score Farris.

Wilson, Farris and Bishop led the Patriots with a pair of three-hit nights, while Romines went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Wilson, who now leads UT Tyler with 12 hits through eight games, was 3-for-4 with two RBI from the leadoff spot of the lineup while Bishop had three RBI on a 3-for-5 performance. Farris, who was hitting ninth, went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI for the Patriots who finished the game with a season-high 14 hits.

TLU’s Dylan Drgac (3-1) took his first loss of the season after surrendering eight hits and three runs through six innings for the Bulldogs who would use four relievers in the series opener. The Bulldogs were limited to seven hits in the game, four coming in the ninth with an 11-0 deficit, with leadoff hitter Riley Schaefer leading the team with a 2-for-5 performance.
