AWARD: Spiker earns second ASC East Division honor

TYLER - UT Tyler sophomore Carissa Spiker has earned her second American Southwest Conference East Division Player of the Week honor after strong performances against LeTourneau and East Texas Baptist last week at the Herrington Patriot Center. 

Spiker started her week by scoring a career-high 25 points after going 10-for-18 from the field in a win over LeTourneau and then scored 15 points in the win over ETBU on Saturday. Spiker would add seven rebounds, five assists and three steals to her career scoring night against the YellowJackets and then dished out five more assists and secured six rebounds as the Patriots swept the season series against the Tigers. She finished the week shooting 57.1 percent from the field.

WEST DIVISION PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Hannah Holt, So., G, Mary Hardin-Baylor
University of Mary Hardin-Baylor sophomore guard Hannah Holt (Lumberton, Texas) earned her third Player of the Week award of the season by averaging 27.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game in an outstanding all-around week. Her play helped the Cru tighten their grip on first place in the ASC West Division. Holt also shot 68 percent (21-of-31) from the field. She had 30 points and seven assists to open the week against McMurry and followed with a 25-point outing in the win over Hardin-Simmons.

University of Texas at Dallas sophomore guard Victoria Pena (Helotes, Texas) averaged 18.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 3.5 steals per game as the Comets picked up a pair of road wins last week. She had 15 points and 11 rebounds in Thursday’s 56-52 win at Louisiana College. Pena then added 21 points, six assists and four steals in UTD’s 72-44 rout of Belhaven.
East Texas Baptist University freshman guard Madison McCoy (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) led the Tigers with 17 points per game, including a 21-point performance against UT Tyler. McCoy also scored 13 points, hitting a trio of three-pointers in a win over Ozarks.
University of the Ozarks junior guard Hailey Ostrander (Alma, Ark.) drilled 11 three-pointers over three games, including a 5-for-5 performance against Bacone, which tied the ASC record for three-point percentage. She also dished out seven assists and scored 26 points in the game. Ostrander hit four more three-pointers against East Texas Baptist and hit double figures in scoring against LeTourneau.
LeTourneau University freshman guard Keauna Whitfield (Rosebud, Texas) helped the YellowJackets to their first ASC win of the year, notching her 11th double-double of the season by scoring 10 points to go with 12 rebounds.
Louisiana College senior guard Kourtney McGhee (Simmesport, La.) was a dynamic playmaker for the Wildcats in their game against UT Dallas, scoring 18 points, adding three steals and a pair of assists. She played 32 minutes and shot 7-of-13 from the field.
Concordia University Texas senior guard Jaela Dejean (Houston, Texas) scored 26 points in the thrilling win over McMurry and hit the game-winning shot from 18-feet out with 1.5 seconds left on the clock to give the Tornados their fifth straight win. For the week, she averaged 21.5 points, 3.5 assists and 3.5 steals per game in two victories.
Howard Payne University junior guard Valarie Matlock (Azle, Texas) posted 15 points, five assists and seven steals in a 95-65 win over Sul Ross State.
Hardin-Simmons University junior forward Addison Garcia (The Colony, Texas) averaged 13.5 points and 4.0 rebounds as the Cowgirls dropped a pair of games on the road.
