RECAP: @patriotstennis earns win over HSU

TYLER – The UT Tyler men’s tennis team opened its spring season with an 8-1 win over Hardin-Simmons on Saturday before bad weather arrived and canceled its afternoon match against McMurry at the Summers Tennis Center. The win was the first in the UT Tyler career of head coach Adam Cohen who took over the program this season. 

UT Tyler led 3-0 after doubles play, including an 8-5 first doubles win by Arthur Fagundes and Pablo Gomez who are ranked No. 13 in the nation. In second doubles play, sophomores Gabriel Hidalgo and Daniel Rodriguez are ranked No. 22 nationally and rolled to an 8-2 win and in third doubles it was Vinicio Hadlich and Jose McIntyre earning an 8-2 win over their opponents from HSU.

The only UT Tyler loss came as No. 11 Fagundes fell 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 to No. 48 Alex Hunt in first singles action. Hadlich is ranked No. 38 nationally and rolled to a 6-3, 6-2 second singles win over Griffin Weinkam, while Rodriguez, Hidalgo and Gomez each cruised in their singles matches. In his first match as a Patriot, Jose Currea earned a 6-4, 6-0 sixth singles win.

UT Tyler will return to action at 11 a.m. on Sunday against St. Edward’s in a neutral court match in College Saturday before hosting Southwestern next Saturday in Tyler.
