TYLER – UT Tyler sophomore Carissa Spiker scored a career-high 25 points and Alex Kochner added 20 more as the Patriots earned an 89-80 win over LeTourneau on Thursday at the Herrington Patriot Center to extend a three-game winning streak.

The Patriots (13-7, 9-4 ASC) improved to 8-1 at home and swept the season series against the YellowJackets after also taking an 82-61 win over them last Saturday in Longview. UT Tyler finished the game shooting 51.6 percent from the field and was 19-for-21 at the free-throw line.

Spiker scored her career-high by shooting 10-for-18 from the field and 4-for-4 at the free-throw line. She added five assists and three steals, while also securing seven rebounds. Her 25 points topped her 23 against Louisiana College in last year’s ASC Championship semifinals and it was the second time this season where she scored 20 or more points. She is now averaging 11.5 points per game this season.

Kochner added 20 points after hitting 6 of 10 shots and then six free throws, while Brittany Johnson added a career-high 19 points after hitting three 3-pointers, three jumpers and four free throws. Bianca Valderrama led the UT Tyler bench with 18 points after going 4-for-4 on free throws and seven shots from the field.

The Patriots finished the game with 28 points off turnovers and 40 in the paint, while the YellowJackets were limited to 14 points off turnovers. LeTourneau’s Jaila Leaven scored a game-high 26 points after she hit four 3-pointers, while all four of the other YellowJacket starters scored in double figures but only two points came off the bench.

Kochner led the Patriots with 13 points at halftime after going 4-for-4 from the field and 5-for-5 at the free-throw line, while Valderrama had 11 points and Johnson and Spiker each had 10. UT Tyler was 15-for-30 from the field in the opening half and 12-for-12 at the free-throw line. The Patriots trailed by seven just three minutes into the game, but would own the eight-point halftime lead and were up by as many as 11 against the YellowJackets to begin the game.

Combined, UT Tyler and LeTourneau were 18-for-18 at the free-throw line and both teams were shooting 50 percent from the field at halftime.

UT Tyler will return to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday against East Texas Baptist (17-3, 11-2 ASC) at the HPC and will also host Ozarks on Monday and UT Dallas on Saturday, Feb. 10 to complete its home schedule for the regular season. ETBU will be coming off a 77-56 win over Ozarks on Thursday in Arkansas. The Patriots 61-56 win over the Tigers last week in Marshall in the first game of the home-and-away East Division series.
