TYLER – The UT Tyler men’s tennis team has been voted to win the American Southwest Conference East Division title by the coaches from the conference. UT Tyler received 12 of 13 votes for the East and UT Dallas had 10 of 13 votes on the West Division side.

“I am not surprised by the preseason poll, especially after their performance at the Fall ITA,” UT Tyler coach Adam Cohen said. “It is important that our men understand any type of championship is possible for them this year if they commit to it the right way. We have lots of work to do in order to set ourselves up for a big run at the end of the year, but I believe they are up for the task. It’s very simple. If they commit to working harder than they ever have, trust the process, and compete with passion, then we will be poised to do something truly spectacular.”

The UT Tyler men’s team comes off an impressive 2017 season where it won the ASC Tournament and made a trip to the NCAA Regionals. They will look to win their 15th straight East Division title and fifth straight ASC tournament championship in their 2018 campaign.

UT Tyler junior Arthur Fagundes and sophomore Gabriel Hidalgo were placed on the ASC Preseason Players to Watch list for the Patriots. Fagundes was selected as an ITA All-American in 2017this past Fall and was the ASC All-Tournament MVP last Spring. He has won 30 singles matches and 27 doubles matches throughout his freshman and sophomore seasons that helped the Patriots to two ASC Championships and two NCAA Regionals appearances.

The team is returning seven All-ASC players, an ASC Freshman of the Year, three All-Tournament players, and a Conference MVP. The UT Tyler men’s roster includes Alvar de la Mano Andres, Alexandre Bouchard, Ford Cunningham, Jose Currea, Arthur Fagundes, Oscar Ferrero, Pablo Gomez, Vinicio Hadlich, Gabriel Hidalgo, Vitor Laporte, Juan Martinez, Jose McIntyre, Marco Miranda, Tomas Parra, Andres Perez, Daniel Rodrigues, and Jushua Vanwinkle.

The 2018 men’s tennis season is set to begin in Tyler on Saturday, Feb. 3 with matches against Hardin-Simmons at 9 a.m. and McMurry at 2 p.m. at the Summers Tennis Center.
