BROWNWOOD – The UT Tyler women’s basketball team fell 70-48 to Howard Payne on Thursday in an American Southwest Conference game at the Brownwood Coliseum after committing 23 turnovers and shooting 3-for-12 on 3-pointers.

The Patriots (7-6, 3-3 ASC) trailed by 17 at halftime and would go 0-for-6 on 3-pointers in the second half to take the loss against the Yellow Jackets who improved to 4-1 in conference play and avenge a season-opening loss at UT Tyler.

Carissa Spiker led the Patriots with 13 points, while Alex Kochner added 10 points and five rebounds in the loss. Kochner was 5-for-7 from the field, but also committed six turnovers. Bianca Valderrama added 10 points, three rebounds and three assists while Samantha Odom scored six points and had five rebounds.

UT Tyler finished the game shooting 16-for-42 from the field (38.1 percent), while HPU was 10-for-25 on 3-pointers (40 percent) and only committed 16 turnovers. Jada Evans led the Yellow Jackets with 15 points and Presley McKethan added 14 points, three assists and two steals.

Spiker led the Patriots with 11 points in the first half after going 4-for-8 from the field and scoring eight of those 11 in the first quarter. The Patriots trailed 17-12 after the first quarter before the Yellow Jackets expanded the lead to 41-24 at halftime by shooting 7-for-13 on 3-pointers.

UT Tyler will return to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday against Sul Ross in Alpine to complete the West Texas road trip. The Lobos are now 5-9 on the season after earning an 84-57 win over Ozarks on Thursday in Alpine.
