TYLER – A road trip out to West Texas will have the UT Tyler women’s basketball team taking on Howard Payne at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday in Brownwood and Sul Ross on Saturday in Alpine in a pair of American Southwest Conference contests.

The Patriots (7-5, 3-2 ASC) are coming off a 14-point win over Jarvis Christian on New Year’s Eve and a 19-point victory over Concordia on Dec. 19 in their last conference game. The Yellow Jackets (7-5, 3-1 ASC) are on a four-game winning streak, including ASC wins over Louisiana College, Belhaven and LeTourneau. HPU is coming off a 78-75 win over Whitworth in a game played in Tyler on Dec. 18. UT Tyler and HPU played a non-conference game against each other in the season-opener with the Patriots winning 83-54 in Tyler.

UT Tyler currently leads the ASC with a 41.6 shooting percentage, a 74.2 scoring offense, 94 3-pointers made and a 31.2 percentage on 3-pointers for the season. The team’s 94 3-pointers are the 14th most in the nation and the team’s 195 assists are the 23rd most.

UT Tyler senior Alex Kochner leads the Patriots with 12.2 points and 8.9 rebounds per game this season and has recorded three straight games with double-digit rebounding performances. Kochner scored a career-high 29 points and had 14 rebounds in a win over Whitworth over the holiday break and is coming off a 10-rebound performance against Jarvis. She has four double-doubles this season and is shooting 45.2 percent from the field. Alexus Bertrand leads the Patriots with 3.9 assists per game and has 23 steals.

Brittany Johnson, Carissa Spiker and Demi Cumby are each averaging 11 points per game, while Samantha Odom is at 8.1 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. Johnson leads the team with 26 3-pointers this season and is shooting 32.5 percent from beyond the arc. She has two games with five 3-pointers coming against Cornell College where she had 15 points and scored a career-high 18 points in the win over Whitworth where she was 5-for-9 on 3-pointers. She had 17 points in a loss to Austin College over the break, while Spiker is coming off the third 20-plus point performance of her career when she scored a season-best 20 in the win over Jarvis on NYE. Spiker, who was starting for the first time this season, was 7-for-14 from the field and also went 5-for-6 at the free-throw line for her best performance of the season. She has eight double-digit scoring performances this season, including going for 16 points and six rebounds in the team’s conference win over Concordia. Bianca Valderrama is adding 5.8 rebounds per game and is adding 5.6 points per game. She is coming off an eight-rebound performance against Jarvis after scoring 10 points at Austin College, while Shadazia Birchette is averaging 4.9 points per game after scoring 10 against Jarvis. Birchette has three double-digit scoring performances this season, including a career-high 13 points against Trinity. 

Sul Ross will host Ozarks on Thursday before playing the Patriots on Saturday and comes into this week with a 4-9 overall record and is 2-3 in ASC play. The Lobos earned a 67-66 win over the Patriots last season in Alpine.
