TYLER – Alex Kochner scored a career-high 29 points and added 14 rebounds for her third double-double of the season to help lead UT Tyler to an impressive 91-63 non-conference win over Whitworth on Wednesday at the Herrington Patriot Center.

The Patriots (6-4) won their second straight game after starting on a 14-0 run that included two 3-pointers from Brittany Johnson, one from Demi Cumby and an and-one three-point play from Kochner. UT Tyler’s lead was 24-14 after the first quarter with Kochner hitting a 3-pointer to cap a strong 10 minute where the team shot 69.2 percent from the field, including going 5-for-7 on 3-pointers.

“This was just a great overall team win,” UT Tyler coach Kendra Hassell said. “We did a good job of forcing Whitworth into some early turnovers, which led to some transition baskets. We also worked hard to make them take contested shots and were pretty consistent grabbing defensive rebounds. I liked how our team continued to attack regardless of time and score. This win gives us some momentum going into Christmas break. We should come back feeling confident, but also recognizing the effort it takes from everyone to get this type of win.”

Kochner, who had a previous career-high of 22 points against Austin College in 2015, would finished the game shooting 13-for-15 from the field with two 3-pointers for her 29 points. She would also grab 14 rebounds which matched her previous career-best back in 2015 against Rust College. She also had double-doubles against Howard Payne and Mary Hardin-Baylor and a season-best 20 points in a win over Centenary.

“Alex was extremely aggressive today on the offensive end, but also did a great job of grabbing rebounds and getting deflections on the defensive end,” Hassell said. “She is really difficult to guard because she scores in transition, she can take you off the dribble, and she can hit the outside shot. Today she did a great job of finishing hard shots on drives to the basket. Our team plays with a lot of confidence when Alex attacks the way she did today.”

Johnson also had a career-high with 18 points after going 5-for-9 on 3-pointers and also added three assists. Johnson, who had 15 points against Cornell College earlier this season, now has two games this season with five 3-pointers and leads the team with 22 3-pointers on the year. Cumby added 13 points and eight rebounds, while Alexus Bertrand had eight points with two 3-pointers and a team-leading four assists.

UT Tyler finished the game shooting 56.1 percent from the field, including going 12-for-22 on 3-pointers (54.5 percent) a day after earning a 64-45 win over UMHB. The Patriots will return to action against Austin College on Thursday, Dec. 28 at 2 p.m. in Sherman before hosting Jarvis Christian at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 31 at the HPC where they are now 4-1 at.
