TYLER – UT Tyler All-American and Academic All-American Daniel Williams has a signed a professional baseball contract with The Garden City Wind of the Pecos League.

A Katy native, Williams was a .381 hitter in two seasons for the Patriots where he had 11 home runs, drove in 72 and had 117 total hits in 84 games. He completed his final year at UT Tyler by hitting .395 with 13 doubles, eight home runs and 53 RBI in his senior season where he helped the Patriots win their third straight American Southwest Conference Championship.

“Danny was not only a phenomenal player and a force in the middle of our line up all year, but one of the leaders of our ball club,” UT Tyler coach Brent Porche said. “He has worked his tail off these last several months since our season ended to get himself in the best physical shape of his life and has earned a great opportunity to fulfill his dream of playing professional baseball. I couldn’t be happier for him and his family. I look forward to following him through the rest of his career.”

The 79 hits by Williams in 2017 are a program single-season record for the Patriots and his 53 RBI were the fifth most in a season. He was named a D3Baseball America, CoSIDA Academic All-America, ABCA/Rawlings All-Region and an American Southwest Conference first-team selection. He is the second UT Tyler player from the 2017 team to sign a professional contract after pitcher Cody Brown signed with the Utica Unicorns. Brown had 40 strikeouts in 47 innings of work last summer.

Garden City will be competing in their fourth season in the independent Pecos League at Clint Lightner Field in Garden City, Kansas. The Pecos League includes the White San Pupfish (Alamogordo, N.M.), Roswell Invaders (Roswell, N.M.), Alpine Cowboys (Alpine, Texas), Tucson Saguaros (Tucson, Ariz.), Ruidoso Osos (Ruidoso, N.M.), Sante Fe Fuego (Santa Fe, N.M.), Trinidad Triggers (Trinidad, Colo.), California City Whiptails (California City, Cal.), Monterey Amberjacks (Monterey, Cal.), High Desert Yardbirds (Adelanto, Cal.) and the Bakersfield Train Robbers (Barkersfield, Cal.). The Yardbirds are the defending Pecos League champions.

Williams and the Wind open their season on May 17, 2018 by hosting Trinidad.
