TYLER – Melvin Anthony scored 23 points and Josh Tatum had 18 points and nine assists to help lead the UT Tyler men’s basketball team to an 84-65 non-conference win over Texas Lutheran on Tuesday in the home opener at the Herrington Patriot Center.
The Patriots (4-0) have matched the best start to a season in a program history that was also accomplished in the 2012-13 season and swept the season-series against TLU (2-3) after also earning a 78-76 win over the Bulldogs back on Nov. 16 in the season-opener. UT Tyler will now open American Southwest Conference play with a road trip to Arkansas where it will play Ozarks at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Anthony led the team with his season-best 23 points after shooting 9-for-12 from the field, including a career-high five 3-pointers. Emeka Obukwelu would add 19 points and six rebounds, while Skyler Hadden had 16 points and seven rebounds for the Patriots who shot 56.7 percent from the field and limited the Bulldogs to 38.8 percent shooting. UT Tyler finished the game with eight 3-pointers, including two from Chase Mason who scored six points and another from Tatum.
UT Tyler trailed 36-31 at halftime but would quickly take the lead after six straight points from Obukwelu had the Patriots up by a 41-38 margin just four minutes into the second half. The game that eventually would turn into a 19-point win remained close through the majority of the second half and was tied at 54 with 10:43 remaining when Caleb Lister hit a shot for the Bulldogs. That basket was followed by two layups from Hadden and another shot from Obukwelu as the Patriots started adding to their lead that grew to double digits for the first time when Mason hit a 3-pointer for a 68-56 lead with 4:53 to play. Anthony would hit his final 3-pointer and score his 23rd point with a 3-pointer to cap the strong performance from him and his team.
Nathan Josephs led TLU with 20 points and six rebounds, while Alex Cage had 12 and Matthew Gillette scored 10. TLU committed only nine turnovers in the game, but UT Tyler owned the glass with a 35-28 advantage. Obukwelu was just four rebounds shy of recording his fourth straight double-double which would have increase his program record, but he is still averaging a double-double for the season with 25 points and 11.8 rebounds per game for the Patriots. Anthony is averaging 14.8 points per game and Tatum is at seven assists per game through four games.
UT Tyler, which outscored TLU by a 53-29 margin in the second half, will play at Ozarks on Saturday but will return home to play Rhodes College at 3 p.m. on Sunday at the HPC.
