SAN ANTONIO – Cornell College went on a 12-0 run to end the game and earn a 69-65 non-conference win over UT Tyler on Saturday in the opening game of the Trinity University Thanksgiving Tournament at the Calgaard Gymnasium.

The Patriots (1-1) led 65-57 after an Alexus Bertrand 3-pointer with 2:10 remaining in the game, but the Rams (1-2) responded with a 3-pointer of their own to cut it to five before two layups and six free throws to close it out. UT Tyler had four turnovers in the final two minutes of the game to allow Cornell back into a game that the Patriots led 37-30 at halftime and 50-49 after three quarters.

Brittany Johnson led the Patriots with 15 points, while Samantha Odom and Carissa Spiker had 14 each. Johnson scored all 15 of her career-best points in the first half on 3-pointers, but would go scoreless in the second half. Odom added six rebounds and two assists in the second game of the season, while Alex Kochner matched a career-best with 14 rebounds and also had seven points, four assists and four steals.

Spiker led the bench by shooting 5-for-9 from the field and also having three steals, two assists and three rebounds. Bertrand finished the game 2-for-5 from beyond the arc and with seven points and Shadazia Birchette added five points, four rebounds and two assists. UT Tyler finished the game shooting 40.7 percent from the field, including hitting eight 3-pointers but also had 26 turnovers.

Diamond Boyd led Cornell College with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Alison Kelly hit the 3-pointer to start the 12-0 run and finished with 11 points on three 3-pointers. UT Tyler owned a 41-34 rebounding advantage over the Rams, but hit nine fewer free throws and took only two shots in the final two minutes after the four turnovers.

UT Tyler will return to action at 2 p.m. on Sunday against No. 14-ranked Trinity before returning to Tyler where it will host Centenary College at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Herrington Patriot Center.
