TYLER – The UT Tyler women’s basketball team will return to action with a pair of games this weekend at the Trinity University Thanksgiving Tournament starting with a 4 p.m. game on Saturday against Cornell College and then a 2 p.m. contest against No. 14 Trinity in San Antonio.

The Patriots (1-0) opened their season with an 83-54 non-conference win over Howard Payne last Friday in Tyler and will be challenged against a Cornell (0-2) team that was the preseason pick to win the Midwest Conference after going 20-5 last season. The Tigers (1-1) started the season ranked No. 7 but went on the road and split with a win over Williamette and then dropped a 65-61 decision at No. 22 George Fox. The Patriots and Tigers did not play each other last season after UT Tyler earned a 62-45 win in the most recent meeting in the 2015-16 season in Tyler. Trinity will play Hardin-Simmons on Saturday before taking on the Patriots on Sunday.

UT Tyler, which received 11 votes in the WBCA Top-25, had a strong start to its season with the 29-point win over HPU with all five starters scoring in double figures and Carissa Spiker coming in as a reserve to record 12 points and nine rebounds. Demi Cumby led the team with 15 points and also had six rebounds, while Alex Kochner had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds and also added five assists. Brittany Johnson led the Patriots with four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points, while Samantha Odom had 13 points and nine rebounds and points guard Alexus Bertrand had 10 points and five assists.

In the win over HPU, UT Tyler shot 9-for-20 on 3-pointers and also scored 21 points off turnovers.

UT Tyler will return home after this weekend’s games to host Centenary College at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Herrington Patriot Center before opening American Southwest Conference play next Saturday at Ozarks in Clarksville, Arkansas.
