SHERMAN – UT Tyler sophomore Emeka Obukwelu recorded his third straight double-double to start the season and Melvin Anthony added 13 points and eight rebounds to lead the Patriots to a 92-81 non-conference win over Austin College on Wednesday at the Hughey Gym.

Obukwelu went for 27 points and 12 rebounds as the Patriots improved to 3-0 with three road wins over Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opponents to begin the year, while the Roos fell to 1-3 with the loss on their home court. UT Tyler will now play its home opener at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in a rematch against Texas Lutheran at the Herrington Patriot Center. UTT earned a 78-76 win over TLU in the season opener in Seguin.

On Wednesday, the Patriots continued their hot start to the season by shooting 50 percent from the field and also hitting eight 3-pointers in their highest scoring performance of the season. Obukwelu, who didn’t have a single double-double as a freshman, now has three after he shot 13-for-16 from the field for his 27 points and also had five offensive and seven defensive rebounds. He had 14 points and six rebounds in the second half to help the Patriots outscore the Roos by five after taking a 41-35 lead into halftime. For the season, he is averaging 27 points per game and is shooting 77.1 percent from the field. Anthony was two rebounds shy of a double-double but scored 13 points after going 5-for-9 from the field and also led the team with six assists.

Chase Mason and Cameron Frank led the team with two 3-pointers each against the Roos with Mason finishing with 12 points and Frank nine. Jamal Green-Gaskin scored a season-best eight points after knocking down a 3-pointer and three free throws and also secured nine rebounds, with five coming on the offensive side of the court. Josh Tatum added six points and six assists from the starting point guard position and Skyler Hadden had nine points, four rebounds and two assists for the Patriots.

UT Tyler finished the game shooting 37-for-74 and owned a 48-37 rebounding advantage over the Roos who shot 43.1 percent from the field. Austin College finished the game with four players in double figures, led by Kam Hogan who had 15 points, Justice Mercadel adding 14 and Michael Holland recording a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

UT Tyler is now 6-4 all-time against Austin College and is 3-0 to start a season for the first time since the 2012-13 season. The Patriots will look to match the best to a season in program history when they take on TLU on Tuesday after the Thanksgiving break.
