Christa Smith has been named the UT Tyler Assistant Dance Coach where she will work with the Spirit Squad and head coach Maggie Williams Koehn.

A Tyler native, she began to dance at the age of 8 and has expansive training in several styles of dance including jazz, ballet, and hip-hop, as well as gymnastics and cheer. Smith grew up competing in dance and has won numerous awards for solo and team performances. In her career, she danced alongside artists such as Kelly Clarkson, Cheryl Crow, and Carrie Underwood.

"I am excited to showcase the style and experience Christa brings to the team,” Williams Koehn said.  "The program is growing and we are all glad that Christa is ready to run full speed ahead with not only the dance team but also the spirit squad program.”

Prior to returning to Tyler, she spent the past four years with athletes at the Nike World Headquarters and studied performing arts and health science at Portland Community College. Her unique experiences and diverse knowledge allow her to connect with her students in a multi-faceted and precise way. She is passionate not only about the growth and development of her students’ skills but also in guiding them through their personal struggles.

Smith says her goal is to always make a positive difference in their lives and to encourage and inspire them to their greatest potential.
