TYLER – UT Tyler head athletic trainer Andrew Cage has earned an Excellence in Athletic Training Award from the Southwest Athletic Trainers’ Association for being directly involved with a lifesaving event or having a significant impact on an individual.

Cage is entering his fifth year at UT Tyler and is currently serving as the American Southwest Conference Athletic Training Chair and is a SWATA Free Communications and Research Committee Member. SWATA presents the Excellence in Athletic Training Award for situations where the victim most likely would have died or life would have been considerably altered had the athletic trainer not intervened by providing skilled medical care, rehabilitation, or assistance.

“It is a tremendous privilege to be receiving this award from SWATA,” Cage said. “I am humbled by the recognition of the efforts that went in to patient care, and will do everything in my power to continue to keep those efforts in every aspect of my clinical practice.  At the end of the day, the goal is to make sure our patient population knows that the staff providing medical services for them cares for the individual and not the injury, and that is something I am proud to say my entire athletic training staff embodies.”

In addition to working clinically, Cage has presented at National and Regional Sports Medicine Conferences on topics relevant to modern athletic training issues. He has used these opportunities to spread awareness of evidence based practice concepts within clinical athletic training settings, and continues to seek opportunities to add to current literature within the profession.

Cage is also an American Red Cross CPR/AED/1st Aid Instructor, a NASM certified Corrective Exercise Specialist, Performance Enhancement Specialist and Fitness Nutrition Specialist, ICTA Certified Cupping Therapist and certified by RockTape in Performance Movement Techniques. He earned a Masters of Education in Athletic Training from the University of Virginia after completing his bachelor’s in Athletic Training from Texas Lutheran University.

The award was presented on Friday in San Marcos at the SWATA Honors & Awards ceremony with Cage not in attendance as he and his wife, Heidi Cage, are off enjoying their honeymoon.
