TYLER – UT Tyler's Arthur Fagundes has built an impressive resume after only two seasons in Tyler and can now add American Southwest Conference Distinguished Scholar-Athlete to it after being honored by the ASC on Tuesday for his impressive work on the court for the men's tennis team and in the classroom. In addition, Alex Bishop (baseball), Michelle Obach (basketball), George Toone (golf), KK Stevens (softball), Tori Musngi (tennis), Matthew Roe (men’s track & field) and Rachel Willis (women’s track & field) represent UT Tyler on the ASC 2017 Winter-Spring Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Teams.

A sophomore from Brazil, Fagundes has won 30 matches in his first two seasons in Tyler and has earned at-large bids to the national tournament each season. He was named an ITA All-American in singles play for his work on the court and was also a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection as a civil engineering major at UT Tyler. He finished his season ranked No. 16 in the nation and with only one regular-season defeat. Fagundes follows Frankie Fischer who earned ASC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete last season for the Patriots along with Kevin Wright (2012), Chayce Stone (2011) and Nick Kreines (2008 & 2009) in the program’s history.

He opened his sophomore season with 10 straight wins, including nine straight two-set victories. He was pushed to a third for the first time in his 10th match of the year and won 4-6, 6-4, 10-1 over No. 17-ranked Will De Quant from Middlebury College. Fagundes also earned ranked win over No. 37 Chas Mayer (Trinity). Fagundes has also earned American Southwest Conference Championship MVP, ASC East Division MVP, All-ASC, ASC All-Tournament and ASC All-Academic honors this season for the Patriots who won their fourth straight ASC title.

Outstanding individual achievement in the classroom and within athletic competition earned 10 American Southwest Conference student-athletes recognition as the Distinguished Scholar-Athlete of the Year in their respective winter or spring sport.

Along with Fagundes, the ASC named as Distinguished Scholar-Athletes are Conner Combs, East Texas Baptist, in baseball; Jeff Martin, LeTourneau, in men's basketball; Candler Gregory, Belhaven, in women's basketball; Jarrod Brown, Mary Hardin-Baylor, in men's golf; Alisa Wilson, LeTourneau, in women's golf; Stefanie Polderman, UT Dallas, in softball; Kate Bramlett, East Texas Baptist, in women's tennis; Derek Gainey, McMurry, in men's track and field; and Shantel Thomas, McMurry, in women's track and field.

The conference sports information directors select the Distinguished Scholar-Athlete within each sport from nominees submitted by the institutions.
