Special Olympics With Swoop set for Monday

Thursday, March 23, 2017

TYLER – The UT Tyler Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will host Special Olympics with Swoop at 6 p.m. on Monday at the Herrington Patriot Center.

“As an organization, SAAC is hoping to get a great sense of community for our campus out of hosting Special Olympics with Swoop for a second year now,” said UT Tyler SAAC Community Service Coordinator Rebecca Floyd. “By inviting Special Olympic athletes of all ages and their families we really want it to be an evening of fun and interaction between our athletes and theirs. Last year our student athletes had a blast running their sport stations, dancing, sharing laughter and making memories. We really want the special Olympic athletes to build friendships with our student athletes, to have a great time doing station work in sports they enjoy and truly competing in our unified sport basketball game.”

The event will be conducted by approximately 100 UT Tyler student-athletes who will support around 40 Special Olympians. The community is encouraged to come out and support the Special Olympians throughout the night. The Special Olympics athletes will compete in basketball, volleyball, track, soccer, stretching and tennis skills stations.  The event will conclude with a 30-minute basketball game between the Special Olympics athletes and UT Tyler student-athletes.
