TYLER – Trenton Buchhorn hit a one-out double on the 10th pitch of his at-bat but would be stranded on third base as No. 2-ranked UT Tyler's rally came up 90 feet short in a 6-5 non-conference loss against No. 8 Centenary College on Tuesday at Irwin Field.

The Patriots (18-4) and Gents (20-3) split their regular-season series with UT Tyler taking the first matchup in February before Centenary earned the win on Tuesday to end. UT Tyler ended its 11-game home stand with a 9-2 record, while Centenary has now won 13 straight games.

Down 6-4 coming into the ninth inning, Daniel Williams singled to center field with one out before Buchhorn stepped to the plate and fouled off five pitches before ripping a double into the right-center field gap to set the Patriots up with runners at second and third with only one out. The hit sent reliever Cole Lavergne to the dugout after he had thrown 6 1/3 innings and 110 pitches. UT Tyler would score a run to make it a one-run game with Gunnar Quick grounding out to third base and pinch runner Henry Sanchez coming into score. Buchhorn would move to third, but remained there as Centenary’s Kaleb Kirk recorded a strikeout of Ben Romines for his first save of the season.

UT Tyler had led the game 4-1 after three innings with Blake Wilson and Jared Pauley driving in runs in the second inning and Welch and Buchhorn having RBI in the third inning. Centenary would tie the game though in the fifth off four hits before taking the lead in the eighth off two hits, including an RBI single from leadoff hitter Zane Wilkinson. The Gents scored their sixth run on a balk call on Hunter Palmer (0-1) who would take the loss after allowing two runs on two hits in the eighth inning.

Buchhorn led the Patriots by going 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Williams, Romines, Wilson and Welch each had two hits. Williams extended his hitting streak to 10 with a pair of singles and is now hitting .420 on the year while Buchhorn is at .407 for the Patriots who are 12-2 at home. Welch is 4-for-8 over the past two games after going 2-for-5 in a game where the Patriots had 15 hits but also three errors in the field.

UT Tyler starter Miles Thomas did not receive a decision in the game after striking out three, allowing only two hits and limiting the Gents to one run through four innings. Chris Stodolka, Chad Hayes, Max Page and Reese Read would also throw during the midweek game. Lavergne took over for the Gents in the third inning after the Patriots got to starter Grant Debevec in the third. He would strike out seven Patriots and scatter eight hits in 6 1/3 where he threw 110 pitches. Aaron Quintanilla and Ian Graham led the Gents with three hits each during a night where they had 12 hits.

UT Tyler will return to American Southwest Conference play this weekend when they play Ozarks in Clarksville, Arkansas. The series starts with a noon doubleheader on Saturday before a noon finale on Sunday.
