TYLER – Alex Bishop drilled a two-run double with two outs in the sixth inning to give UT Tyler its first lead of the game and Ben Romines made a diving catch to strand the bases loaded to end the game to help lead the No. 4-ranked Patriots to a 5-2 series opening win over Sul Ross on Friday at Irwin Field.

The Patriots (16-3) finished the game with seven hits from seven different player, while Ryan Cheatham (6-0) struck out three and scattered four hits to keep record perfect through six starts. Reese Read would record his fourth save after striking out two but also loading the bases. With two out and the bases loaded, Read would coax a fly ball to shallow right-center field where Romines raced in from right field and made a stellar diving catch to end the game.

Bishop went 1-for-3 in the game with his double in the sixth driving in Gunnar Quick who had singled and Trenton Buchhorn who was intentionally walked.

The game was tied 1-1 after Blake Wilson had led off the third inning with an opposite field double down the left field line. He advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jared Pauley and then scored on a wild pitch to even the game until Bishop’s blast in the sixth. Wilson would take a bases loaded walk in the sixth to cap a three-run inning would hold up for the Patriots.

Daniel Williams was 1-for-4 and drove in the fifth run of the game with a single in the seventh for his conference-leading 26th RBI of the season and to extend a seven-game hitting streak. Williams and Tim Hunter have now reached base in 10 straight games after Hunter went 1-for-2 with three walks. Hunter now leads NCAA Division III with 23 walks this season and has a .482 on-base percentage for the Patriots.

UT Tyler and Sul Ross (9-13, 2-5 ASC) will continue the series at 1 p.m. on Saturday with a doubleheader.
