ABILENE – The UT Tyler Patriots hit five home runs on Friday and are now one win away from taking the American Southwest Conference Championship tournament and securing the program’s sixth trip to the NCAA Division III tournament after earning a 16-2 victory over Hardin-Simmons in the first game of the ASC Gold Bracket Series.

The Patriots (29-16) and Cowboys (28-17) will resume the best-of-three series at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Hunter Field with an if-necessary game to follow if HSU takes a win in the first game. UT Tyler is the defending tournament champion and will be playing for the program fifth tournament championship.

UT Tyler cruised to the 14-run win on Friday behind 18 hits and Cason Adams (7-2) going seven innings with only two earned runs allowed and six strikeouts.  The offense was highlighted by a season-best five home runs which tied for the fourth most in program history. UT Tyler had an eight-home run game in 2009 for the program record. On Friday in Abilene it was Alex Bishop, Trenton Buchhorn, Sam Lane, Brady McCoy and Braxton Hollenshead who hit home runs in a game where the Patriots scored five runs in the fifth and sixth innings to blow the game open.

UT Tyler led 3-0 after scoring three runs in the third with Lane doubling to center field to score the first run, followed by RBIs from Daniel Williams and Josh Burns. Up three going to the fifth, Brady McCoy crushed a two-run home run and was followed by Hollenshead blasting his third homer in three weeks. Hollenshead, who hit the game-winning home run last Saturday against Concordia, had not hit a home run all season until the final regular-season series at Sul Ross. After a Graham Welch single, Bishop hit his sixth home run of the season and the third UT Tyler homer of the inning to give the Patriots an 8-2 lead.

The lead would swell and the outcome became too much with the Patriots scoring five more runs in the sixth highlighted by a Welch double that scored three runs. Lane and Buchhorn would hit back-to-back homers in the eighth for the final runs of the opening game of the series.

Lane led the team with three hits and three RBI, while Welch, Wilson, Bishop, Buchhorn, Burns, McCoy and Hollenshead had two hits each.

UT Tyler senior Michael Blevins is scheduled to start the second game of the series.
