ALPINE – Graham Welch went 4-for-4 with a triple, home run and three RBI to help lead UT Tyler to an 18-4 series-opening win over Sul Ross on Friday in a game where the Patriots hit four home runs and pounded out 18 hits at Kokernot Field.

The Patriots (23-15, 12-7 ASC) had a season-best in runs and hits in the game that saw Josh Burns drill a grand slam for the first home run of his career and also homers from Alex Bishop who finished the game with three RBI and Braxton Hollenshead who hit a three-run home run to give the Patriots a 6-3 lead. Welch, who hit his nationally-leading 10th triple in the game and extended the program’s single-season triple record, also hit a solo home run in the game against the Lobos.

Cason Adams (6-2) earned the win for the Patriots after striking out six and scattering seven hits in 6 2/3 innings of work. The junior right-hander is now 14-9 in his career with 126 strikeouts. Adams walked only two and surrendered three earned runs in the third inning before cruising behind the offensive explosion by the Patriots before Hunter Palmer closed out the game with two strikeouts and only one run allowed in 2 1/3 innings.

A freshman from Plano, Welch is now hitting .355 with 10 doubles, 10 triples and hit his first home run, while Bishop leads the team with a .424 average after going 2-for-4. Bishop and Trenton Buchhorn lead the team with four home runs each with Buchhorn leading the team and conference with 50 RBI after adding one RBI on a night where he went 3-for-6 for the Patriots.

UT Tyler and Sul Ross will resume and conclude the final regular-season series of the year with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
