TYLER – No. 17 UT Tyler improved to 11-3 at home after scoring five runs in the fifth inning of a 7-6 non-conference win over Southwestern on Tuesday where the Patriots faced 10 different Pirate pitchers at Irwin Field.

Graham Welch and Sam Lane each had three hits and Trenton Buchhorn and Alex Bishop had two each for the Patriots who finished the game with 12 hits including four in the fifth where most of their damage was done. UT Tyler (16-7) was down 4-2 going to the fifth before a Lane single up the middle scored Welch to tie the game and a Buchhorn run-scoring double gave the Patriots their first lead of the game. The Patriots tacked on two more run with a Dalton Smith sacrifice RBI bunt and a Kelly Dorsett sacrifice fly to left field to score Buchhorn.

Chad Hayes (2-0) earned the win after he threw a scoreless top of the fifth with one strikeout, while Reese Read earned his first save of the season after striking out two in a 1-2-3 ninth inning to close out a night where nine Patriots took the mound. Cade Suggs made his first start of the season and had one strikeout in two innings, while Max Page, Hunter Palmer, Hayes, Jacob Clark, Travis Payne, Blake Brunneman and Tyler Stallings each took the ball.

Buchhorn extended a 10-game hitting streak after going 2-for-5 with a double and triple, while Lane recorded his fourth three-hit performance and Welch his third three-hit game. Bishop, who leads the team with a .402 batting average, went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Sam Plotkowski and Blake Wilson each added singles.

Collin Buckley (0-2) was tagged with the loss for Southwestern (5-15) after allowing four earned runs in the fifth off five hits.

UT Tyler will return to action at 6 p.m. on Thursday with its series opener against LeTourneau before the two teams play a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Friday at Irwin Field.
