TYLER – Dalton Smith drove in two runs on two hits and Max Page threw 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to help lead the No. 20-ranked UT Tyler baseball team to an 8-6 series opening win over Mary Hardin-Baylor on Friday at Irwin Field.

The Patriots (7-3, 1-0 ASC) and Cru (4-6, 0-1 ASC) were tied 5-5 after five, but they game would turn in the seventh with UT Tyler scoring three runs on two hits and an error in the seventh. The frame saw Ben Romines drive in Michael Caruso on a single to right and Braxton Hollenshead deliver another run with a sacrifice fly to left field. UMHB would trim the lead to two with a run in the eighth, but Chad Hayes would throw a scoreless ninth inning with one strikeout to pick up his second save of the season and the 15th of his career.

Page (1-1) earned his first win of his collegiate career by limiting the Cru to three hits and no runs in his 2 1/3 innings. A freshman lefty, Page relieved starter Cason Adams who struck out two and left after surrendering three earned runs in 4 2/3 innings during his fourth start of the season.

Smith finished the game 2-for-4, while Romines would go 2-for-3 with a triple and score three runs form the nine-spot in the lineup. Hollenshead would add two RBI in the game, while Graham Welch went 0-for-3 but did take a walk to extend his team-leading reached base streak to 10.

The Patriots and Cru will resume the three-game set at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Irwin Field with a doubleheader. UT Tyler will send Tyler Stallings to the mound in the opener and Michael Blevins in the second game. The first game is scheduled for seven innings while the finale is a nine-inning game.
